The Shyde sisterhood, a race of powerful magicians, has lived since the dawn of recorded history, existing in numerous and scattered groves throughout the world of Denzar. Most of the sisters spend their entire youth deep within these groves, living an almost idyllic life of devotion to the good of their companions. Thus secluded, they have little to fear from the outside world. Every Shyde sister, however, feels some compulsion to visit the outer realm, an unquenchable desire to travel and see what wonders exist beyond her small home grove. Over the ages, those who have left the safe confines of their homes have encountered a troubling truth: their very strength among their own kind, the ability to see the best in others and to promote a greater good, can sometimes be a weakness in a less civil society. Their desire to find some good in and have some love for everyone can blind them to the evils of reality. Thus, since time beyond memory even for the long-lived Shyde, those that travel the outer world have sought out a protector and guide. This hero (or heroine) is chosen partially to provide an element of physical protection, but is also useful to help identify the dangers in an alien environment that is quite unlike their cherished grove home.
The title of hero can be misleading to those who have never encountered a bonded pair before. The hero (or indeed the heroine) is first and foremost a companion to the Shyde, providing guidance and friendship in a sometimes confusing environment. The outer world is about as foreign as one could imagine to a young Shyde. Among the sisters of a grove, lies are unheard of, and even exaggerations are uncommon. This makes even an experienced sister more prone to all manner of deceit and dishonesty. A companion could, for instance, shield the Shyde from immoral merchants looking for a gullible customer.
Within their grove, two sisters will never meet without exchanging a hug or kiss, a fact that gives almost every Shyde a deep-rooted need for physical contact. In many cases, this need is fulfilled by no more than a simple touching of the other's hand, or by sitting next to a dear friend. A Shydes love is boundless, and this cuddly affection is shown toward any friends she may make. While it is not uncommon for a Shyde and her hero to be lovers, their friendship is the more essential bond. A Shyde and her hero trust each other in every way, up to and including entrusting their lives to each other. Given the Shydes naturally flirtatious nature, however, she is likely to tease her hero unmercifully if given the opportunity, be they lovers or just the closest of friends. For some sisters with an unusual sense of humor, the very fact that this may embarrass her hero would only make the experience more fun. This odd streak of humor among some of the Shyde is perhaps as close to malicious as the loving race would ever get.
How a Shyde chooses her companion varies greatly from sister to sister, as well as from group to group. The sisters, being magically strong and physically weak, will often seek a counterpoint, a brave warrior, or noble Angel Knight. More rarely, a Shyde may choose a mage for her companion...perhaps less fierce, but more in keeping with her own interests and strengths. Some will quietly follow a prospective hero for prolonged periods of time, ensuring their match; in other cases, they rely on a sister's help to find a potential guardian. In either instance, the Shyde always makes sure to spend some time with her choice. Even when another sister has suggested someone, it is never truly an arranged match. If the Shyde and the hero do not feel the bond, no amount of forcing will ever bring them together. There is a link that develops between the Shyde and her hero, something that draws them close and makes their pairing almost inevitable.
Of the pair, the sister is typically referred to as "love" or "Shyde", though other endearments are sometimes used. The hero is almost invariably referred to as simply that, "Hero". Even in a situation where the companion is a heroine, the Shyde, being an all-female race, rarely pay much attention to the different terms for the sexes in other cultures.
The bond is a definite link between the two, more than a simple friendship, or even the bond between two lovers. A bonded hero and Shyde, while typically not able to read each other's minds, have a deep sense of insight into the other's mentality, and can often read their intentions from a simple sigh (or more likely, in the case of the Shyde, a giggle). For a long-bonded pair, it’s sometimes as if a conversation can pass with a glance or a smile or even a kiss. This can be disconcerting to some outsiders, but definitely gives the pair an advantage in many situations.
The ritual of the bond varies with each Shyde and prospective hero. Certain elements are always identical, however. In accepting the bond, a hero almost always states one sentiment. The specific wording might differ, but the meaning is the same. “I would die for you.” As long as a Shyde's hero lives, he or she will always be there to meet any threat that she might encounter. She will protect her hero just as fiercely with her magic, but she need fear no physical harm as long as her hero lives and is by her side.
